Oil on Linen

Final Irony comments on the human tendency to conceal our emotions. Hands cover the subjects' face, create an ambiguity that could indicate either great joy, sorrow, or rage. Both Victor and the Creature feel intense emotional extremes, and their ability or inability to conceal those emotions impact the trajectory of the work. What is a “true” indicator of emotion? And, in the case of this piece, is it the presence or absence of color?

What inspires the artist?

"In this work I wanted to examine the suppression of our own natural emotionality as analogous to our suppression of nature. I aimed illustrate a nebulous expression that could be either rage or joy."

“In the natural world, there is an innate cycle of rebirth and destruction, but when human aspirations force premature destruction on the earth, that cycle is disrupted. In this case, we forget we are a part of the earth and its destruction is also our own. In that way the real ‘monster’ is human hubris against nature.”
