In The Secret Garden, it is the bright blue of forget-me-not petals that bring Archibald Craven out of his deep depression. Forget-me-nots are thought to symbolize true love, something Craven has lost since the death of his wife. Brenna symbolically depicts this transformation by contrasting a vivid blue with black, and arranging the pieces in the shape of a five-petaled flower. The physical process of hand-embroidering brings to mind the arduous journey of recovering from grief. While the blackness of depression is not entirely removed, Brenna’s piece represents a kind of balance being achieved between loss and happiness.

What Comes in your box

What inspires the artist?

"The black burden seemed to lift itself again and he knew he was a living man and not a dead one. Slowly—slowly—for no reason that he knew of—he was 'coming alive' with the garden."

“My pieces were intricately and laboriously stitched over many weeks, a process of making that embodies the labor (emotional, spiritual, psychological and physical) inherent to experiences of grief, depression, healing, and growth.”
