Narcissism

Fabric, Rhinestone, Beads and Mirror on Wood

Narcissism captures Victor’s inner state, one of both infinite potential and destructive egoism. Consistent with this collection’s motif of sight, the wood base is in the shape of an eye. The center is embedded with cracked glass, symbolic of Victor’s personality fragmenting into states of mania and depression throughout the course of the novel. Yarn, beads, rhinestones, and moss surround it. While these materials all have positive and soothing associations, when arranged in this fashion they become intentionally disturbing, reminiscent of decomposition. Through such visual disturbance, we're reminded to look inward. Victor, once a promising and talented young man, is decayed and corrupted by his unending narcissism.

What inspires the artist?

"In Frankenstein, Victor’s interest and talent in science could’ve been used for others. However, narcissism blinded and overpowered him, and he became the “monster”.

“Victor puts himself into his creation the same way an Artist puts themself into their work, but has delusional expectations and therefore shuns the Creature when it reflects aspects of himself he hates.”
