“Based on British landscape painting, Maytime on the Thames (1888) by William Sidney Cooper, this work brought me back to the countryside I remember so vividly as a child that I could smell the sheep! I remember sitting on similar riverbanks making daisy chains and picking buttercups, so it seemed an appropriate place for Alice and her sister to be lazing. The color has been toned down and restricted to denote the return to ‘dull reality.’ However, there is one escapee hiding amongst the tall grass in the foreground.”—Emma Knight
